Back Row Radio exists as an alternative to the standard Christian radio, to offer believers and unbelievers alike a steady stream of amazing music that may never get any play on the mainstream, spanning genres and time, and including fresh indie talent. Music is cathartic, healing, powerful. We hope to be encouraging and positive, but there is also value in music that is painful, emotional, struggling, because that's where a lot of us on the "Back Row" - of our churches, of our classrooms, of society in general - tend to live. In the Psalms, David gave us proclamations of joy, ballads of worship, but also songs of lament, fear, anger, and shame. God works through it all to speak to us, to grow us, to heal us. We hope to be one way God speaks to you.
In March of 2013, Matthew Coker started a simple twitter account, @BackRowBaptist, with the goal of poking fun at himself and his fellow Christians in a lighthearted way. He was originally anonymous, but decided to reveal his identity in early 2014, and with that, his difficult testimony. Following this (and even building up several months beforehand), God had lined up several in need of honest advice, counseling, accountability, and more. Suddenly, a simple comedy Twitter account began growing into a real ministry that ministers to struggling Christians trying to be their best for God. This ministry, and the comedy aspect as well, grew into a blog, a YouTube channel, and a fairly popular podcast - Back Row Baptist Podcast.
As a part of the BRBP, beginning in episode #3 and carrying through nearly every episode through #117, independent Christian artists have been put in the spotlight in the middle of each show. In the nearly 3 years of episodes up to that point, dozens of indie artists had submitted their music and hundreds of songs were in our catalog. That is when the idea of a radio station first truly became a possibility. Matt's father and grandfather both worked in the radio business their whole lives, and Matt himself has experience in nearly every job in the radio industry.
Thanks to internet radio provider Live365 and our generous Patreon donors, Back Row Radio was able to become a reality. It started out strong and where God takes it from here is an exciting mystery and we hope you'll be here with us to experience it.
