If you are anything like me, you are constantly watching what the weather is going to be like for the days to come. God has given us many different forms of weather -- sunny, overcast, rainy, snowy... Some of us get excited over different types of weather and some of us get discouraged. It’s all a matter of preference, I guess. But how many people do you know that get excited over a storm? The people I had the chance to ask would prefer not to be in a storm at all. As a matter of fact, they would like to tell the storm to just go around so it doesn't ever bother them. This is unrealistic, we can’t control a storm even on our best days.
Storms are imminent and will appear in our lives. Some storms will be small while others will seem unbearable and no matter how hard we try physically, we will not be able to control the course of these storms. There will be times that we run from these storms and other times we will just bunker down and face it the best we know how.
The best protection I have found from the storms in my life is what I put my hope into.
I don’t hope that the storm will go around but instead I put my hope into the Lord. When you put your hope into something you are saying that you put your trust in whatever you hope in, so I put all my trust and faith into the Lord. The best name for this would be my spiritual storm shelter.
Jesus’ disciples had a hard time figuring this out. Remember the time that Jesus calmed the storm? Jesus was asleep in a boat while they were crossing the waters and his disciples freaked out because the storm was so fierce they thought they were going to die. They woke Jesus asking him to save them and he said, “why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Immediately, he calmed the storm and they were amazed at the authority he possessed. (Matthew 8: 23-27)
The storms will come and when they do, I will be okay. I will be okay because the One I put my trust into has all authority to calm every storm. Some storms we will be prepared for and some will come unexpectedly. Either/or, He is in full control.
Running away from the storms in our life is probably going to take us in the wrong direction. Facing them is going to add to the spiritual growth in our life. This spiritual growth is how the Lord Jesus is going to help you face the storms yet to come.
As believers, we will still face these storms, so my encouragement for you today is that you find your spiritual storm shelter, put your faith and hope in the Lord, and trust that He will be by your side through every storm that comes your way.
