Sometimes it is easy for us to think that we are past God’s grace. Sometimes we think that we have sinned too many times. Can God really forgive me even though I have sinned so much? How can God forgive me when I have wronged Him so badly?
1 John 1:5-7 says this:
“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Jesus cleanses us of all sin. Not just some, but all. All of us have pasts. We all have experiences that we rather not reflect upon. There is hope for us in that Jesus can cleanse us from sin. All sin.
We need to do our part, though. Jesus doesn’t just forgive everybody. He is a just God and administers justice where justice needs to be given. 1 John 1:5-7 says that we need to walk in the light, as Jesus is in the light. It would be hypocritical for us to say we follow Jesus, but still continue in our old ways.
In Romans, Paul discusses those who claim to know God, but do not follow him.
“For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”
God desires all of us, not just part of us. To truly follow Christ, we need to give everything to Him. God knows our hearts. He knows when we are fully devoted to Him and when we are not.
1 John 5 goes on in verses 8-10 to say this:
“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
Again, God knows our hearts. He knows we have sinned. Everyone has sinned. Does this make us too far gone for God to save us? Absolutely not! He is merciful and grants us forgiveness. Again, we must do our part. 1 John 5:5-10 emphasizes that we need to repent – confess our sin and turn from our sin. God is faithful. He promised to forgive us if we truly confess our sin and walk in the light. God will forgive, but we must make a commitment to follow Him. And follow through with it!
Yes, we all sin every day. Does this mean we are too far from God’s grace? No. God is faithful. He knows our hearts. I encourage you to truly follow Jesus with your whole heart. Give everything to Him. Our past experiences do not make us too far away for God to save us. He is faithful and gracious!
